About this plugin

Your design system, in a form an AI coding agent can actually use.

Spec Layer reads your components, variables, and styles, then writes documentation onto your Figma canvas and structured specs for AI coding tools. Copy a component straight into Claude or Cursor, or publish your library and pull it into your repository with the Spec Layer CLI.> Spec Layer website> Documentation & Workflows> Contact developerMeasurements, anatomy, variants, states, and token bindings are read directly from your design. Nothing is guessed. Optional AI writing drafts the prose around those facts, and it is the only part that uses a model.

For AI coding agentsCopy any component as a compact YAML doc carrying the exact tokens and styles it depends onCopy a foundation as a DTCG token documentPublish a library from the plugin, then run npx spec-layer setup in your repoYour agent reads the same component and token facts your designers see in FigmaFor designers and PMsCreate visual documentation of measurements, anatomy, properties, states, variants, tokens, and theming on Figma canvasDocument your variable collections, text styles, effect styles as readable token tables and color referencesThe Library tracks every generated document, detects changes, and updates outdated doc frames in one clickOptionally, turn on AI Writing if you want to pre-fill component guidelines. Create a baseline and then make edits based on your project context.

Optional AI writingDrafts overviews, usage guidance, do's and don'ts, interaction notes, and accessibility guidance from the selected component. Everything else runs without a model.

Paid version is optionalEvery documentation feature is free and works without an account. Publishing is free too, within an allowance of one library file and 10 changed publishes a month. Pro raises that to 10 files with no fixed update cap, lifts the AI writing allowance, and adds priority support. $7.99 a month or $79.99 a year.* Canvas documentation and Copy for AI are produced locally. Nothing leaves your file until you ask for AI writing or publish a library.
